GAMPI TISSUE PAPER

hand patterned | hand assembled

recollections of events filled with expectation and loss

Wallflowers

Wallflowers transformed garments and clothing forms revealing their underlying stories and memories. Made out of Japanese gampi paper, the iconic shapes of suit jackets, vests and shirts trigger recollections of events filled with expectation and loss. Formal occasions, rituals, weddings, funerals, kissing a parent goodbye as they leave the house for work in the morning?  I began by drafting the patterns using historical patterns as reference, then starched the paper to enhance its sculptural quality and texture. The pattern was then cut and carefully assembled mimicking sewing and couture technique.
